Acne always seems to form at the worst times: like before a big date or a business presentation. Luckily, there are some things you can do to prevent blemishes from affecting a big day. Acne is a skin condition caused by hormones which targets nearly all teenagers and more than half of adults. While it's impossible to avoid acne entirely-hormones will do what they do-there are ways to reduce your chances of breaking out. The most important thing you can do to prevent acne is to develop a cleansing ritual for use in the morning, at night, and after exercise. Using a mild soap, gently wash your face from under your jaw to your hairline. Rinse thoroughly. Talk to your dermatologist about which kind of cleanser to use. Astringents, rough scrub pads, and strong formulas all have the potential to dry out your skin, making your acne worse, instead of better. Be sure to cleanse your scalp daily as well. Plenty of people get acne along their hairline and on their scalp, and a gentle shampoo can help prevent the oil buildups that can lead to zits. As much as possible, avoid touching your face. Squeezing, popping and even grazing blemishes can spread the bacteria-laden contents, prolonging your breakout. And breaking that zit may lead to scarring. Nicking a blemish while shaving is tantamount to popping it: Your breakout can spread! To avoid this, clean the area to be shaved with soap and warm water, and then coat it with shaving cream. This makes shaving smoother, so you're less likely to irritate your acne. To keep acne at bay, women should look for makeup that is oil free. Scan the labels for the phrase "non-comedogenic," which means the product is less likely to induce a break-out. If you're determined to stick with your favorites, swap cream blushes and shadows for powdered or mineral ones, and go easy on the foundation. This will minimize skin irritation. Acne can also be brought on by environmental irritants, like high humidity, smog, cigarette smoke, and excess sunlight. All of these factors can bother your skin, increasing bacterial activity. But the worst of the environmental irritants is airborne grease, from, say, the fryers at a fast-food restaurant. That extra oil that lands on your face contributes to already clogged pores. While you may have to avoid the sun, the good news is that you can enjoy that chocolate bar! Studies have found that eating junk foods doesn't prompt breakouts. While that doesn't mean you should give up fruits and veggies, the occasional candy bar won't harm your skin. Because acne can result from the elevated hormones that come with stress, take a deep breath ... and relax. Meditate, take a break from work, do something to uplift your mood - and simultaneously reduce your chances of breaking out. Changing your daily behaviors can help prevent acne breakouts to some extent. Unfortunately though, most sufferers of the hormone-induced skin condition will still need help in the form of over-the-counter or prescription medications.More »

Exposure to the sun is the cause of up to 90 PERCENT of wrinkles! Wear sunscreen every day // even in the winter AND indoors. Pick a formula that protects against both ultraviolet A AND B rays, with an SPF of at least 30. The second S is // wear SHADES! A good pair of sunglasses will help protect the soft and sensitive skin around your eyes, where crows feet form, and where sunscreen may not reach. Plus, shades prevent you from squinting and thats number THREE// say no to SQUINTING and SCOWLING. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, any repetitive facial movement, over time, can form a groove beneath the skins surface, and that groove will eventually form a wrinkle. You shouldnt stop smiling or frowning to avoid wrinkles, but if you have a hard time seeing, get glasses or contacts to cut down on your squinting. S number four.--SLEEPING on your back is important for preventing wrinkles. If you spend every night with your head buried in the pillow, youre likely to get sleep lines which will lead to wrinkles. Equally necessary to sleeping correctly is our fifth S // eat plenty of SEAFOOD especially SALMON! These foods are full of omega-3 fatty acids, which help keep skin plump and youthful. Theyre a valuable source of protein, which is one of the building blocks in your skin. Which brings us to S number six, which is to SOFTEN your SKIN. Moisturizing daily can make you look younger, simply because moist skin equals glowing skin. Emollients like lanolin help fill in space between skin cells, which plumps up skin in the short term, while humectants such as glycerin soak up moisture from the air and deliver it to the skin. Our seventh S is SALT cut down on it since it promotes water retention, which is a cause of wrinkly, puffy, or baggy eyes. The last, and maybe HARDEST of the eight Ss for some of you, is to STOP SMOKING. The 4,000 chemicals in cigarettes damage your skins natural collagen and elastin, the agents that keep skin smooth and plump. As a result of this damage, smokers skin is up to 40 percent thinner than non-smokers. Following the eight Ss will help keep your skin healthy and more radiant. With all of the available anti-aging, anti wrinkle creams available, it is important not to lose sight of how what you eat can also play a pivotal role in your skin care. While a good rule of thumb is to follow a basic healthy diet, there are certain super foods that REALLY get your skin glowing! Some of the most effective are those rich in vitamin A, a nutrient known for being a potent antioxidant. What that means is that it stops unstable oxygen molecules from hurting the DNA and machinery of healthy skin cells, in turn protecting against premature aging. Vitamin A is SO effective, in fact, that a form of the nutrient is the main ingredient in many of anti-wrinkle and anti-acne creams, like Retin-A. So which foods get an A+ in terms of getting your A? Low-fat dairy, (like yogurt and skim milk cheeses), and orange vegetables and fruits, like carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, squash, cantaloupe, and mangoes. Foods full of vitamin C are also key to achieving smooth and sturdy skin. C-rich foods have antioxidants, AND they provide the essential ingredient for collagen production. The collagens are natural fibrous proteins that connect and give structure to the skin, keeping it taut and youthful. Aside from the obvious oranges // blackberries, blueberries, strawberries and plums are all ripe with C. Another awesome antioxidant is found in vitamin E-containing foods, like vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds. Vitamin E is especially useful for guarding against damage from ultraviolet radiation-and those antioxidants help protect cell membranes from free radicals. In fact, vitamin E enhances the effect of vitamin C, which is why various companies combine both in over the counter skin care products Still ANOTHER skin-saving ingredient you can find on your plate is omega-3 fatty acid. Fatty acids help strengthen your skins barrier, potentially preventing wrinkle-causing sun damage. Find omega-3s in all KINDS of foods, ranging from fish and oysters to walnuts and flaxseed. Finally, fill your cupboards with whole grains and your fridge with turkey and tuna, all sources of selenium. Selenium is a skin-saver because (along with sunscreen!) it helps safeguard the skin from sun and environmental damage while protecting skins elasticity. And dont stop with what you eat! Drinking plenty of green tea can improve your skin further. Green tea contains polyphenols, which prevent skin from getting puffy and haggard, and functions as a potent antioxidant, so it works like vitamins A, C, and E to prevent skin damage. Pop quiz: People catch warts from: A. frogs, B. toads, or C. the human papillomavirus, also known as HPV? If you guessed C, you're correct! Warts are actually non-cancerous tumors that grow on the top layer of your skin. And as you already know, they are caused by HPV. Because there are over 100 different types of HPV, each strain can have different effects on the body, so that's why there are multiple types of warts. "Common warts" are what affect most people. They have a rough, grainy texture and fleshy color. These warts can be passed from person to person through touching or through objects like razors or blankets used by someone carrying HPV. You can also spread warts on your own body by touching open cuts or scrapes. Common warts can be treated with over-the-counter medications containing salicylic acid. With these medications, it can take up to 12 weeks to completely GET rid of a wart. For a faster fix, your doctor can do 3 things. One, freeze the wart off with liquid nitrogen -- tough warts may need multiple treatments. Two, he can apply cantharidin, a substance that causes the skin to blister, lifting the wart off your skin to be cut away. Or if all else fails, the wart can be surgically sliced or lasered off. Because of the risk of scarring, this is usually avoided. A second type of wart, plantar warts, grow strictly on the soles of the feet. They are usually a flesh, gray, or brown color. It's common to see little black dots in these, which are caused by the bleeding of small blood vessels into the tissue. Plantar warts ARE treated the same ways as common warts, but because they are more stubborn, they'll PROBABLY need professional removal. To prevent getting them in the first place, always wear shoes where people go BAREFOOT, like around pools and in locker rooms. Flat warts are smooth, flat topped warts that can grow in large numbers of 20 to 100 on the face or along scratch marks. While they are more common in children, men can get them mainly along their beard line and women on their legs. Because of their large numbers, these can be tricky to cure. Here's your vocab word for the day: dermatitis. It means swollen, itchy skin. And almost any type of rash, dryness, or skin irritation can be blamed as being some form of it. Most of us deal with a type of dermatitis on a regular basis. Recognizing what YOU have and how to treat it can save you from A LOT of unnecessary discomfort. The most common culprit is contact dermatitis. This is when your body reacts to touching a foreign substance by forming a rash. Triggers are different for everyone, but are usually brought about by two categories of factors. The first -- irritants, like soaps, deodorants, or cosmetics. After repeated use they can cause dry, itchy patches of skin, usually on the hands and face. The second category encompasses contact with allergic reaction causes, like latex, metals, perfumes, medications or plants like poison ivy. The resulting reaction can vary -- form a tender rash or bumps to, in extreme cases, blisters. Treatment is simple-- the rash should clear up in a few weeks if you avoid your triggers. If the skin is itchy, soothe it by applying an overt-the-counter hydrocortisone cream. In rare cases of a very bad rash, your doctor can prescribe an oral medication to reduce swelling, itching, and spreading. Probably the best known dermatitis is eczema, as these names are really interchangable. Flaky, crusty and INSANELY itchy patches of skin appear, usually on your arms, legs, face or hands. Experts believe eczema is caused by a mix of exposure to irritants and a hereditary disposition. For fast relief, visit your doctor for prescription corticosteroid creams or pills designed to relieve itching. Seborrheic dermatitis is a third common type of dermatitis. As one of the main culprits of dandruff, it causes a dry, itchy, flaky scalp. Gaining control of it by buying medicated shampoo, found at any drugstore. Look for one with ingredients like tar, salicylic acid, selenium sulfide, or ketoconazole. The last form we'll talk about is neurodermatitis. What can start out as a simple bug bite or patch of dry skin is made worse by constant scratching, which makes skin thick, leathery, and even itchier. It can become a vicious lose-lose cycle: you scratch because you itch, and then you itch because you've been scratching. Your doctor can help set you up with a routine to help. Red, swollen, INTENSELY itchy or burning skin is the first sign of a flare up. Depending on how bad your case is, this can turn into dry flaking or blisters and seeping lesions. These patches can show up anywhere on the body, but usually appear on the inside of your elbows, backs of the knees, and on your face and hands.//The most common method of attack is a prescribed topical medication. Corticosteroid creams and ointments can be used to control the itch. The only downside-- long term use can cause the skin to thin and lighten. Immunomodulators make up a newer type of topical cream that reduces both inflammation and your immune system's reaction, and have few side effects. When topical medications aren't enough, your doctor may give you a stronger oral corticosteroid. Antibiotics may also be used if the skin has become infected. In severe cases, you may be given an immune suppressing medication, but only for a short period of time because of harmful side effects like increased risk of cancer and infections.More »
