Healthy, happy, glowing skin is as easy as 1, 2, 34! Step oneand listen carefully, because this is a complicated onewash your face. I know, I know but youd be surprised-- many people confess to skipping this step before bed. This is NO good, because proper washing removes the dirt, sweat and makeup of the day, not to mention the excess oil on your skin. But believe it or not for something that seems so simple -- theres a right and a WRONG way to wash! First off, use a gentle facial cleanser instead of moisture-sapping bar soap above the neck. Use lukewarm water, a gentle touch, and remember-- skin thats soapy is as bad as skin thats dirty! Memorize that if it helps you to remember to THOROUGHLY rinse after cleansing. Most dermatologists recommend washing both after you wake up and before bed, but sensitive types can get away with just a rinse in the AM. Now that your face is clean, lets get to step two: exfoliate. Exfoliating products slough away dead skin cells that would otherwise stay on your face, clogging pores and dulling your natural radiance. Plus, exfoliation increases blood flow, so youll look rosy and youthful no matter HOW late you stayed up the night before. When exfoliating at home, use a scrub with TINY grains, as big ones, like those derived from fruit pits, can damage your skin. Some people benefit from daily exfoliation, but if youre sensitive, keep skin supple by cutting down to every other day. Impurity free, move on to step three! Moisturize. By sealing moisture into the skin, creams and lotions act as a protective layer against the dirt and toxins of the day as well as keep your skin hydrated. Pick a non-greasy, non-comedogenic (non pore-clogging) formula if youre a naturally oily type. Finish your four-step skin regimen by applying sunscreen. Why? Havent you watched any public service announcements? Direct exposure to the sun is the NUMBER ONE cause of wrinkles and discoloration, not to mention the most preventable risk factor associated with skin cancer. Thats means you should never, EVER skip the screeneven when its cloudy or youre indoors. Pick a broad spectrum formula that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and make sure it has an SPF of at least 30. Bonus points if you pick up a good moisturizer that contains sunscreen. Indoors, your skin which requires AT LEAST 30-percent humidity to stay softwill be subjected to heavily heated rooms with humidity levels hanging around a mere TEN percent. Heres Tip #1--To stop winter dryness before it starts, pick up several small humidifiers to put around your home. They help you hydrate you by emitting moisture into the air. Tip #2 -- If you experience eczema or chafing that WORSENS in winter, cut down on washing. Soap cleans away natural oils and fats that keep your skin hydrated and protected from bacteria. Use soap every other day, using water in between. Parts prone to sweating, though, require daily cleansing with soap. Tip #3 Intense heat in a shower SHOCKS your skin, so stick to warm water and shorten your shower time to 15 minutes or less. Tip #4 Post-shower, apply moisturizer while your skin is still damp. Moisturizers act as a WALL to prevent water from evaporating out of the skin as it dries, helping it to stay SOFT. Consider ointments, OR moisturizers with humectants like alpha-hydroxy acids or glycerin, both of which draw moisture into the skin. Use a LIGHTER formula if your skins naturally oily. Moisturizers will sink in BETTER if you exfoliate your skin once or twice a week. Although it might sound counterintuitive to scrub thirsty skin, doing so removes dead cells that prevent lotions from being properly absorbed. If you have previous skin disease, though, exfoliation could further WORSEN your condition. Tip #5: You WILL want to cut back on masks, peels, and toners. Although theyre fine in summer, these products can strip VITAL sebum oil from your skin. And since sebum is your bodys natural, moisturizing oil this leads to a flaky winter face. Tip #6: Even during the winter, cover exposed areas with sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outside. The sun is very potent in winterits reflective powers are at 80% strength off snow, as opposed to just 15% off sand. Youll need a formula with an SPF of at least 30 that also contains agents like zinc oxide or avobenzonethey block out aging UVA rays. Finally, tip 7-- put on gloves BEFORE you leave the house. Because your hands have fewer oil glands than the rest of your body, this step helps maintain moisture, particularly if you apply lotion first. Exposure to the sun is the cause of up to 90 PERCENT of wrinkles! Wear sunscreen every day // even in the winter AND indoors. Pick a formula that protects against both ultraviolet A AND B rays, with an SPF of at least 30. The second S is // wear SHADES! A good pair of sunglasses will help protect the soft and sensitive skin around your eyes, where crows feet form, and where sunscreen may not reach. Plus, shades prevent you from squinting and thats number THREE// say no to SQUINTING and SCOWLING. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, any repetitive facial movement, over time, can form a groove beneath the skins surface, and that groove will eventually form a wrinkle. You shouldnt stop smiling or frowning to avoid wrinkles, but if you have a hard time seeing, get glasses or contacts to cut down on your squinting. S number four.--SLEEPING on your back is important for preventing wrinkles. If you spend every night with your head buried in the pillow, youre likely to get sleep lines which will lead to wrinkles. Equally necessary to sleeping correctly is our fifth S // eat plenty of SEAFOOD especially SALMON! These foods are full of omega-3 fatty acids, which help keep skin plump and youthful. Theyre a valuable source of protein, which is one of the building blocks in your skin. Which brings us to S number six, which is to SOFTEN your SKIN. Moisturizing daily can make you look younger, simply because moist skin equals glowing skin. Emollients like lanolin help fill in space between skin cells, which plumps up skin in the short term, while humectants such as glycerin soak up moisture from the air and deliver it to the skin. Our seventh S is SALT cut down on it since it promotes water retention, which is a cause of wrinkly, puffy, or baggy eyes. The last, and maybe HARDEST of the eight Ss for some of you, is to STOP SMOKING. The 4,000 chemicals in cigarettes damage your skins natural collagen and elastin, the agents that keep skin smooth and plump. As a result of this damage, smokers skin is up to 40 percent thinner than non-smokers. Following the eight Ss will help keep your skin healthy and more radiant. Its a simple question and a fair one: If youre going to pay a lot of money for an anti-wrinkle cream, you want to know that its going to work! Unfortunately, wrinkle creams dont come with guarantees. The FDA classifies creams and lotions as cosmetics, NOT medicine, which means theyre not as carefully tested for safety and effectiveness as medical anti-aging treatments, like Botox shots.Most doctors agree that if anti-wrinkle creams could HEAL skin like medical procedures can, they would be classified as drugs, NOT as cosmetics. Thats the bad news. But dont fret-- the good news is that the effectiveness of ANY product depends on its active ingredients and there IS evidence to suggest that certain ingredients in anti-wrinkle creams work. A favorite, pentapeptides, are compounds that serve as chemical messengers in the body. According to research centered on wound-healing, pentapeptides are crucial in encouraging cells to create more collagen. Because collagen is the support structure that gives skin its young, firm look, we all want lots of it! Sadly, though, aging causes our collagen levels to decrease, which leads to sagging and wrinkles. Thats why collagen-creating pentapeptides are a common ingredient in anti-wrinkle creams. Other anti-wrinkle creams may work by including retinol, a derivative of vitamin A. Retinol is an antioxidant, which means it stops unstable oxygen molecules from harming skin cells and causing wrinkles. The most effective, strongest form of retinol, called tretinoin, is available only via prescriptions like Retin-A and Renova. Weaker concentrations are sold over-the-counter in certain anti-wrinkle creams, and they may also be effective over time. Another popular ingredient in wrinkle creams is really just a fancy version of vitamin B3, or niacin.Variations of niacin could make the top layer of the skin thicker, in turn improving its ability to retain moisture, and, thankfully, reducing wrinkles. So, the million dollar question: do all these ingredients mean that anti-wrinkle creams are a wonder or a rip-off? The answer lies somewhere in-between. If youre looking for treatment for MILD or preventative aging, if you dont like the price tag of medical treatments, and if you dont mind waiting for results, then yes, anti-wrinkle creams are a good option for you. I can understand why people with sensitive skin think that they should skip exfoliating their faces and bodies. After all, it seems counterintuitive to rub and scrub at skin thats known for being red, rashy, itchy, or dry. But ANY dermatologist will tell you that exfoliating is one of the most important parts in ANY skincare routine! Your skin is CONSTANTLY cycling through cellsin fact, 40,000 of them die every minute. Many of those dead cells fall from your body on their own, but others will sit indefinitely on your skin. The dead skin cells give you an ashy look, because they LITERALLY sit on your face, covering up the fresh, young skin beneath. An exfoliant gently removes those dead cells, leaving you radiant. Plus, the process of exfoliating encourages blood circulation, bringing more oxygen to the surface, which makes your skin rosier and brighter. To exfoliate properly, chose a scrub with small granules, as bigger ones can rip and tear at the skin, doing more harm than good! Make sure you use a specified FACIAL exfoliator above the neck, as body exfoliants are too harsh for the sensitive skin on your face. Then, gently rub the product into clean skin, making small circles over the area being exfoliated. Most people benefit from exfoliating several times a week, although it depends on skins sensitivity and dryness levels. By sloughing away dead skin cells, exfoliating readies your body to soak in moisture. Washing your face should be a part of your daily routine -- it removes makeup, pore-clogging air pollutants, and more. But are you doing it in the most effective way possible? Learn the right way to wash your face.

You do it daily (or at least you should), which means its easy to wash on autopilot. But careless cleansing can do your face more harm than good! Before you start scrubbing, consider this: Except for the genitals, the skin on your face is thinner than ANYWHERE else on your body. So, protect it by picking the mildest cleanser that will still thoroughly remove dirt from your skin. Look for buzzwords like oil free, non-comedogenic (which means pore-clogging), hypoallergenic, and non-acnegenic (which means acne-causing). Just make sure you use SOMETHING. Sticking to plain water wont sufficiently remove bacteria, dirt, and impurities. First, wash your hands thoroughly and then use them to wet your face with lukewarm water. Extreme temperatures can shock your skin, potentially causing sensitive red patches to erupt on your face. Now, squeeze a dime-sized amount of cleanser on your fingers and begin at your forehead. Work down your nose, then outwards to your cheeks and down to your chin and neck. Use a soft, circular motion--never scrub or rub. This is a mini-massage for your face. The blood and oxygen that will rush to your face will leave you rosy and radiant. Continue for about 30 to 60 seconds before gently rinsing with more lukewarm water. Make sure you get ALL the soap-- it dries out skin, which is the opposite of what we want. Once your face is gunk-free, patdont rub!it dry with a soft, clean towel. You should always wash your face like this before bed, and most dermatologists recommend that you also wash in the AM. And although many people stop here, next, its time to exfoliate. To do so, rub a small-grained exfoliant into your skin, following the same path that you did when washing. Although people with sensitive skin shouldnt exfoliate daily, EVERYONE should scrub up at least several times a week. Thats because this process eliminates dead skin cells and deeper layers of dirt, allowing the moisturizer to penetrate easily. The good news is that regular exfoliation digs deep into every part of your skin, which means you can skip gimmicky products like pore strips, which cause you to yank at your skin, and leave sticky residue behind. And skip toner, since gentle cleansers should be sufficient to strip away the days dirt and makeup. Once clean, trap that moisture to keep your skin hydrated, healthy, and soft with a non-oily moisturizer. Then, hit the hay, and dream of the beautiful skin youre in! Pitching your old skin care products is always a little painful, but scrubs, creams, and sunscreens dont last forever. In fact, over time their active ingredients will start to lose potency. This means, that the anti-aging serum youre spreading on your skin may be useless! And funny enough, some products become stronger as the base holding them degrades. That might sound great, but a super powered product can cause your skin to get red and irritated! Also, a product thats been sitting around for too long may have become home to bacteria which can cause acne and other skin infections. OK, so! How do you know when its time to toss your dusty bottles and tubes? It would be easy if manufacturers added an expiration date on their labels, but most wont. In fact, they dont even have to! The FDA has NO regulations for how long over-the-counter cosmetics can be sold, even if the product is a cosmeseutical. Thats the fancy name for anything that alters the skins appearance, like over-the-counter wrinkle creams. To help you out: As a general rule, once you open a lotion, cream, serum, or other skincare product, youll want to toss it within six months...or one year if the products in a pump container, which can protect the product from bacteria. And products that list water as one of the first ingredients have the shortest shelf life, cause H2O encourages the growth of bacteria. Similarly, natural and preservative-free formulas are likely to become bacteria-ridden quickly. Other signs its time to toss include changes in color or in scent. And if the product has become thinner, clumpy, or has separated into layers, its time to can it. Its not ALL a guessing game, though! Things are more clear cut with PRESCRIPTION anti-aging and anti-acne treatments, as well as with sunscreens and sunblocks. Because the FDA considers these products medicinal, theyre carefully regulated and have expiration dates stamped on their labels. But be careful with your SPF! Dermatologists warn that the expiration date listed is actually the time a store can leave it on the shelf. Once sunscreen is OPEN, it really shouldnt stick around for more than six months. And if youre using sunscreen as you should--which is daily--youll never have a bottle that lasts that long anyway! Your skin will tell you that getting a facial is a definite DO! But not all spas, estheticians, and treatments are created equal. If youre going to get pampered, engaging in a little investigating beforehand is essential. Spa sanitation is crucial to a fantastic facial, so dont be afraid to ask for a tour of the facilities before you book your appointment. DONT feel intimidated to do thisif youre going to shell out $100 plus for a facial, you deserve a clean facility. During your tour, look for red flags, like estheticians double-dipping into wax, creams, or other lotions. Check out the wet rooms, too. Bad signs are mold, stray hair, and dirty water. Once you book your facial, DO make sure that youre seeing a licensed esthetician. Depending on the state you live in, she should have 200 to 600 hours of training, plus a passing grade on both a written and a practical test. After hitting the books that hard, ANY esthetician should gladly show you her credentials. Being licensed does not a skilled esthetician make. A good one will ask about your skin routine and sensitivities before even touching your skin. DO know what type of skin you haveoily? dry? combination? --and be prepared to discuss it. If your face is acne-prone, facials may cause more harm then good, as steaming skin, which is common in all facials, will actually make redness and inflammation worsen. Meanwhile, you should be wary of ANY spa or esthetician that offers fat-dissolving treatments along with your facial. In April 2010, the FDA attested that these procedureswhich are called lipodissolve, lipotherapy, mesotherapy, or lipozapsimply dont dissolve fat. They dont do much of anything, and may result in complications like redness, swelling, bruising, and even permanent discoloration! So DONT stay in a spa seat if youre offered a treatment like this! Also, DONT go spa-ing to get chemical peels or Botox injections. These are medical treatments and should be administered by a dermatologist. After your facial, you can make the gorgeous glow last by simply leaving your skin alone for the 48 hours followingthat means no makeup. Only use light washes and moisturizers for the 48 hours. And DO return to the spa every four to six weeks, which is the length of time it takes your skin to regenerate. When selecting a spa for your next facial, always remember the biggest DO in the book: If it feels wrong, DONT stick around!More »

With 3.5 million cases diagnosed annually, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States today. In fact, 1 in 5 Americans will develop some form of skin cancer in their lifetime. Most skin cancer forms on areas that are directly exposed to the sun, like the face, head, neck, tips of the ears, hands, forearms, shoulders, and back. Meanwhile, the most deadly form of skin cancer, melanoma, can be DIRECTLY linked to the sun in 65-percent of cases. These statistics are frightening on their own, but remember that such cancer cases could possibly have been PREVENTED. It is well known that sun exposure is the most preventable risk factor for skin cancer. The World Health Organization has even ultraviolet radiation from the sun or artificial sources, like tanning beds, on the list of known cancer causing substances. And if THAT doesnt get you, this should: direct exposure to the sun is THE number one cause of aging skin. In fact, up to 90-percent of wrinkles, liver spots, and other visible signs of aging can be attributed to the sun! And dont think that you are protected by winter, clouds, water, or even WINDOWS. Sixty to 80-percent of the suns rays can penetrate cloud cover and water, plus 80-percent of rays are reflected off snow. In addition, darker skinned people are NOT immune to the suns harmful rays, even though they may not burn as easily. In fact, at 77-percent, the survival rate among skin cancer patients is lower in black people than in white people, who have a 91-percent survival rate. Therefore, applying sunscreen DAILY is non-negotiable. To get the maximum benefit, pick a formula with a sun protection factor, or SPF, of 30. This will block 97-percent of ultraviolet B rays. UVB rays are the sun burning rays, which cause painful red sun burns and skin cancers. Ultraviolet A, or UVA, radiation is the other form of harmful sunlight. This form is more often associated with aging skin, and serious skin cancers. SPF has nothing to do with UVA protection, so it is important to use a sunscreen that has Broad-Spectrum written on the label. Contents such as zinc oxide or avobenzone provide this coverage. Remember though, that sunscreen is only effective if you apply it right! Youll want to use a full shotglass-worth of product to coat your body. And remember --apply sunscreen about half an hour before you go outdoors, and then every two hours or so. Always reapply after swimming or sweating profusely. Sunscreens can both rub off and wash off, so after drying with a towel, make sure to reapply. The facts prove that doing so will keep your skin happy and healthy! Scalding water strips your body of its own natural moisturizers, so tepid temperatures are recommended. Once you step under the WARM spray, use a body wash thats suited to your skin type. If youre dry, look for products with shea butter, olive oil, or vitamin E on the label. Sensitive types may be best served by gentle, natural ingredients like oatmeal, aloe, and more of that soothing vitamin E. If youre prone to body acne, find a wash that contains zit-zapping salicylic acid (also known as beta- hydroxy acid.) or benzoyl peroxide. Lather up well and work your hands from your collarbone down your body, using a firm, circular motion. As we age, our cells reproduce slower. In terms of the skin, this causes the middle layer, or dermis, to thin due to decreased production of key structural elements. Meanwhile, elastin which is a protein that allows skin to be flexible and collagen fibers that support the skin become brittle and can unravel. Because elastin and collagen keep your skin smooth and plump, it makes sense that losing them causes wrinkles. Older skin is less able to retain moisture and its own natural oils, further contributing to the formation of wrinkles. What's more, older people have spent decades making habitual facial expressions, like grinning, frowning, and squinting. Over time, the temporary creases and lines formed by these expressions become more permanent in the dermis layer of the skin. While you can't turn back time, you CAN do things to minimize the formation of creases. Most importantly, start using sunscreen every day. It's quite vital, as exposure to the sun is THE number one cause of premature aging to the skin. That's because UV rays damage collagen fibers, in turn leading to a more wrinkles. Another simple way to save your skin is to stop smoking! Smokers make much less collagen than non-smokers do, and skin without collagen is skin that is creased. Many of us assume that if its in a skincare product, the ingredient is automatically safe. The truth IS that the FDA DOESNT regulate skincare products, so unlike medications, theyre NOT rigorously tested. The FDA counts skincare products as a cosmetic and not as medication. Therefore, knowing how to interpret a skin care label is non-negotiable! Lets start by looking at the ingredients your skin will savor. Among the greatest components are antioxidants, agents that fight free radicals, (unstable oxygen molecules.) If left unchecked, free radicals damage skin cells and DNA, accelerating the signs of aging. The most effective and safest antioxidant ingredients are RETINOL, which is a form of Vitamin A found in prescription products like Retin-A, and in over-the-counter creams and L-ASCORBIC ACID, or Vitamin C, which is the only antioxidant that is known to encourage skins creation of extra collagen, an agent that encourages plumping and smoothing. If youre seeking a cream that will also lighten your skin, you may notice hydroquinone or kojic acid printed on the label. The ingredients are both known for their efficiency in bleaching the skin, so theyre perfect for women with sun spots and the darkening of the skin common after pregnancy.
